Click on our "stars' for larger images The Valley joined communities across the country to recognize the contributions of its volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 22-28, 2001. The theme "Change the World – VOLUNTEER!" set the stage for the Points of Light Foundation, the Volunteer Center National Network, and organization members to applaud the efforts of volunteers and plan special events. The Volunteer Action Center of Valley United Way used National Volunteer Week as an opportunity to thank people who exemplify the citizens of the Valley who make outstanding contributions throughout the year. The Volunteer Action Center Advisory Review Committee made this year’s Volunteer of the Year Award selections. This year’s award recipients are:
The criteria for these awards are an individual or groups’ commitment of time and effort, and their impact on the community through their volunteer efforts. The Corporate Community Excellence Award and Sharon Bryce Holly Community Hero Award stress the importance of community responsibility and social awareness and embodies the United Way’s vision of a caring community. On Tuesday April 24, 2001 the 9th Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception was held at Hewitt Memorial Hospital, 45 Maltby Street in Shelton. from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The Reception recognized the award recipients for their hard work and dedication to the Valley community. The Community Hero award is named after Sharon Bryce Holly who passed away in 2000. Sharon was employed by the Valley YMCA and began there as a volunteer. She was recognized as an Eagle Award recipient by her co-workers and was an active member of the Professional Directors of the YMCA. She was also an active member of the Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council and was instrumental in establishing the clothes for success initiative. She served on the Volunteer Action Center Advisory Committee, Birmingham Group Advisory Board, and was Past President of the Valley Heart Association. "Sharon had always shared her willingness to help whenever needed as an employee or a volunteer. Her positive attitude and valuable contributions to the community have benefited hundreds of people each year here in the Valley," stated Suzanne Reilly, Executive Director of the Valley YMCA. On April 12, 2000, Sharon received the Community Hero Award, a much-deserved recognition. The Volunteer Action Center of the Valley United Way provides the Valley community with a public awareness of the importance of volunteerism, is a central clearinghouse and referral source for volunteers, provides training and technical assistance in areas of volunteerism, mobilizes corporate and community resources to meet the Valley’s volunteer needs, and develops community volunteer recognition programs.
