Food Drive a Success

Everyone paused just long enough for an impromptu photo.

The new Spooner House in Shelton isn't open as yet, but when it does shortly, the food pantry which is part of the Valley Food Bank will be stacked to the rafters thanks to the generosity of the Valley community. the dedication of the Valley's letter carriers, and some quick work by Valley United Way's Youth Leadership students and some other volunteers who helped unload postal trucks throughout a busy afternoon on May 10.

The Letter Carriers Food Drive is annually one of the biggest single day food drives in the country, and members of the Youth Leadership Program have been participating for more than a decade now. Letter carriers pick up non-perishable food items from postal patrons throughout the Valley as they make their normal Saturday deliveries. However, the trucks are not empty on their return trip to the post office as the letter carriers pick up the food and deliver it to the area food bank network. Spooner House is the biggest location, and the students helped unpack the food, sort it, and place it on the new shelving in what promises to be a much more efficient food delivery system operating at the new Spooner House.

The Spooner House is the Valley's only homeless shelter. It has been operating in an old, converted fire house in Derby for more than two decades. It's beautiful new home in Shelton is nearing completion, and the food pantry has already been completed, so the food deliveries were made to the new facility rather than the old.

The Youth Leadership Program is made possible through the generous support of the Raymond P. Lavietes Foundation which provides core funding.
