Members of Valley United Way’s Youth Leadership Program, high school students from public and private schools in the area, have been putting their leadership training skills to work. For the past several months, the members have been planning two fundraising events to take place in November.
Battle of the Bands - On Saturday, November 13th, the Youth Leadership Program hosted a Battle of the Bands at Shelton Intermediate School. Eight bands played a variety of music and competed for prizes. The bands included: Eclectic Nobodys, Intensify, Malpractis, Two Hour Shower, B-side, Illface, and Far From Ordinary. The winners were Far From Ordinary and B-side. They received gift certificates to Sam Ash Music Store and both bands will receive air time on Southern Connecticut State University's WOWL and the University of New Haven's WNHU. A portion of the proceeds were donated to Samantha Keefe, a student at Assumption School in Ansonia, who is suffering from cancer. Basketball Tournament - On Saturday, November 20th Youth Leadership’s Second Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament took place at the new Boy’s and Girl’s Club facility in Shelton at One Positive Place. The tournament was for high school students and trophies were awarded to the first place team which was composed of students from Seymour High School. Pizza was donated by local restaurants and pizza parlors for sale at both events. |
